Shrove Tuesday & Silent Auction

Christ the King Lutheran Church in Goldendale WA had its 25th annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper and Silent Auction on February 21, 2012. They fed 135 people in the community. It required  170 volunteer hours to perform this activity. $1730.00 was raised from the event and the Columbia Gorge Chapter of Thrivent Matched $800.00. A total of $2530.00 will go to the Back Packs for Kids program to feed school age kids, of low-income families, on the week ends. At present the Back Pack volunteers are providing nutritious snacks for about four hundred twenty five children in the county.

October is Hunger Awareness Month

We would like to introduce you to a program that needs your support!

Last school year, the Back Packs for Kids program provided weekend food to over 250 Head Start, Primary, and Middle School students throughout Klickitat County. The participating children were identified by their schools as being known to go with out food resources during school closures and especially on weekends. Back Packs for Kids provided weekend snacks to these children hoping to fill the weekend gap.

The feedback from school administrators and staff has been very positive, reporting increased student attendance and increased parental involvement at school. The need for nutrition for proper brain and body development is well documented, so having food resources available every day of the week is absolutely essential for the students. We are asking for your support to continue to help make this possible.

Back Packs for Kids is off and running for the 2009-2010 school year. We anticipate delivery of 375 food bags to five Klickitat County school districts and three Head Start programs every week—an increase of service to 125 more children than last year, bringing our budgetary need to $41,000. We hope you are willing and able to help us with a tax-deductible contribution.

Last year Back Packs for Kids operated under partnering non-profit organizations. This year we are proud to announce that Back Packs for Kids has been granted its own 501©3 status. This will enable the program to qualify for more grants and issue receipts for tax-deductible contributions directly to donors.

Goldendale's Back Packs for Kids program started in November 2007. It is the intent of many to see that nutritious snacks be provided free of charge to children. The partnership of a volunteer group and Goldendale School District will prepare the snack food sacks and given out to the kids once a week during the school year.
